Here’s an HDRI taken with my iPhone of all things. The app in question is TrueHDR by Pictional which is availible now on the app store.

Pretty good app in terms of ease of use and does a very good job aligning images. However, it only takes 2 photos for the HDRI which can still leave out certain ranges of light. I’d like to see an automated process as well with a 3 second count down timer so you can just focus on holding the phone still and not having to deal with the jitter caused by tapping the screen.

Also, it may be a limitation of the camera API however, I’d really like to see some sort of automated bracketing where the user can tap to focus and pick a neutral exposure or maybe even just an on-screen slider and then tap once, wait two or three seconds and 3 shots taken at maximum bracket would then be taken.

It’s nice to see a proper HDRI app on the iPhone but compared to desktop applications like Photomatix or Photoshop there are limitations.

It should be noted that you have the ability to merge two images from the camera roll together. So I suppose in a serious pinch you could use the iPhone and this app as a remote HDRI engine for the field.

Verdict: If you love HDR photogaphy and want to be able to shoot like this anywhere, anytime, then this app is for you.

So I’m going to start posting more from my mobile in an attempt to gainfully employ my trust iPhone and capture images to share with you all. Here is one such set of images. Leaving work today and getting to the 7th floor of my garage. Looking up at the buildings the fog was obscuring the tops. It was a very ominous sight as you weren’t able to tell how high the buildings were. Sort of like the dystopian future from 80s sci-fi.

So this being my first live music gig, I really didn’t know what to expect. It all started a number of month ago when I was stumbling around and found his Hip Hop Violin video on YouTube. Being a violinist myself, albeit rusty, I was insanely impressed by Paul’s versatility and his passion for his music. So months later, Paul had an online concert which I of course attended and tried my best to interact with. Couple of months later, I get an email from Paul’s manager and the rest is in the gallery. Definitely one of my most awesome gigs. It hasn’t really hit Paul yet, but he’s definitely a celebrity. I got to spend the evening with him, his manager and friends and family and it was one of the nicest times I’ve had in a very long time. Additionally, building professional and personal relationships with all involved was pretty amazing.

The other kicker of the evening was the fact that Paul Dateh was performing with DJ Johnny Juice. For those playing the home game, that’s DJ Johnny Juice of Public Enemy fame. I didn’t realize this until the end of the night and it hit me like a ton of bricks as I’ve been a fair Public Enemy fan for some time now. He was introduced to me early in the evening as just “Juice”. It totally didn’t dawn on me until the end of the evening that it was DJ Johnny Juice. I was a huge fan, I’ve taken his Sonar tutorials and the like. Amazing producer and absolutely astounding on the tables. He was one of the coolest guys I’ve met, very down to earth and absolutely hilarious.

Meeting the bunch was definitely a high point of my career as a photographer and I am very much looking forward to hanging out with them as well as working with them all professionally in the future. Thanks to Paul Dateh for his music and charisma. Thanks to Adam Wallenta for having me and inviting me to dinner. Thanks to Juice for being a funny mojo with some sick skills on the decks. Also thanks to We Know City for putting on such a great event and thanks to Home(the club we were at) for helping to produce this event.

Until next time, friends!

THE DETAILS: To register, simply send me an email at joe@dev-inspire.com . I need the following information included in the email. Please do not omit any of this info as my spots are limited. If you do not include all of the info I cannot confirm your slot. Do not assume your slot is confirmed until you’ve received a confirmation email from me personally.

Needed:

First and Last Name

GOOD contact phone number

Make, Model, and Color of your vehicle

Tag number and state of the vehicle you wish to have photographed.

Day preference, Saturday or Sunday as well as early or later.(This does not imply that slots are guaranteed to each day. They are first come, first serve.)

SLOT DETAILS!!

Shooting starts sharply at 12:00PM on Saturday, you will be assigned an exact time(such as 12:15/12:45, etc). Your slot is only 15 minutes long so you should not risk being late. If you are unable to make your assigned slot, please call or txt me immediately that day and let me know so I can bump you to the end of the line.

I have 48 slots available at this time, 24 for each day. I cannot rightly go beyond that, however, if at the end of the day there is still time, I will take adhoc sessions, but I prefer that folks register ahead of time.

What to bring on the day-of:

Identification, preferably your driver’s license

Cash or money order, no personal checks please.(If you wish to use paypal, please email me to make arrangements)

Proper tools to remove front plates from your car(if any) while on the shoot. I will clone out holes and other uglies (removing back plates are optional).

Tire shine, California dusters, or any other touch up stuff you might need to make your ride as clean as possible.

The way it’ll work

Essentially it’ll be like any other meet except we have certain areas roped off for photography. Each car will be given a 15 minute block and I will shoot each car as extensively as possible. As most of you know I touch each photo individually and I don’t just blanket everything. Different cars will have different effects and feelings making your photograph an individual piece, even if I may use the same angles as other cars.

I can put text or logo on your poster as well(think of race posters you’d get at a car show). I will do those types of designs at no extra cost, just work it out with me when we choose your print.

All the photos will be available online for viewing in a gallery similar to the galleries I’ve had for previous events. Every picture that I shoot will be available there. The photos you choose for your print and your digital download do not necessarily have to be the same photo. You will have a number of photos to choose from for each car. You can consult with me on an individual basis either here on the forum or via email/text(I’d prefer the latter due to pm limitations here on the site). You are more than welcome to hotlink to any photos in any gallery on my site. Doing so is quite easily accomplished by clicking the “share” button in the gallery above the photo you are currently viewing. Your digital download will be lightly watermarked as with the rest of my photos. The difference will be that on the day of you will be granted a license to use the photo elsewhere other than on my site(i.e. sponsorship promotion, myspace, facebook, etc… places where you have to upload and cannot hotlink) You will read and sign the license agreement on the day of your shoot.

Some things to remember… We will be at a garden, but we will not be the only ones there. We need to remain relatively quiet. This means no tomfoolery whatsoever. There are police everywhere in the area so no burnouts, revving, or loud stereos while at the gardens. You’re on your own once you leave the property. Any tomfoolery or jackassery and you’ll be asked to leave. No warnings!

Examples:

In addition to the galleries from The June 22nd Meet at Keith’s Shop, The 2nd Annual Toys R Us meet, and the AAM Nissan/Infiniti Meet here are some examples of my style and the gardens.

Extreme “otherworldly” vs. Normal Processing

Artistic and “over the top”

Candy and Gloss:

FYI, you won’t get stuck with HDR or normal processing, I will dual-process each photo and you can choose your style. I know some folk don’t like HDR styling.

Congratulations to my friends Erica and Will on their recent wedding. Here are a sample of their event. This was a breakthrough for me as I found things that I do really well that I didn’t know about but more importantly, I found yet more bad habits that I need to fix for next time. I was able to apply things I learned from my last wedding to keep the progress up. Paying attention to the mistakes I made at the McFarland wedding seriously paid off this time as my keep rate was just under 50%, which for me… is really really high. I totaled out 411 finished photos and 8 HDRI’s of the location.

I’ve had a very good response to this event and the images. Below are just a few of my favorites.

I had so much fun shooting this wonderful couple. They are definitely beautiful people and are very photogenic thus making my job that much easier. It was an absolute joy and I’d do it all over again. Of course everyone’s favorite candids at weddings are of the kids, and they were many at this event.

Thanks for looking, leave some love if you like what you see.

Ok, I’m absolutely ecstatic about this. I’ve been wanting to do it for a while and Alyssa has been very excited, but timing and scheduling issues have gotten in the way. Thusly, I’ll spare you the entire 93 shot set that Alyssa took and leave you with a link to her set, but I’ll drop a few pics here.

For those that don’t know, she’s a precocious 5yr old with a bright spirit and an addictive smile. She’s been the subject of a few hundred of my finished photos at this point.

I have no intention of pushing her into photography. If it’s something she wants to do then I’ll work to provide her with every opportunity for her to learn and grow in her own way. If she wants to do something else, then same effort, different subject. I want her to follow her dreams, not mine.

Here are my shots of her(one of which taken with the Sony for obvious reasons). You can see her set here.

As some of you might have noticed, I do all or as much as I can of my own design(e.g. my logo, web design, etc). Well you can add my latest progressive business card to the list as well. I just ordered 1000 of the following card. I’m sure you’ll end up with one in your hand eventually. With this I went for a very aggressive and progressive design that’s even slightly futuristic/sci-fi. The point that I’m driving home is that I’m not just the next wedding photographer. Weddings happens to be what makes the money for now but in the grand scheme of things is a small part of what makes me a photographer. The card says I’m in your face, ready to rock, let’s get this done with extreme prejudice. haha. I’ve even been told it’s scary. Well good. It’s not blasé like many other’s I’ve seen and I definitely didn’t want the whole, "look-at-me-I-printed-these-at-home" kind of business cards.

A look at the design:

Some of you might have already noticed but now when you go to dev-inspire.com you get a new front page that will allow you to branch off to 3 other sites. These sites are this blog, my photo gallery(kindly hosted by smugmug who absolutely rules.) and a page dedicated to my wedding photography. Again I’m taking example from my mentor and friend Vanessa Ard of Vanessa’s Photography. This will enable me to filter out the wedding stuff for my customers and keep the artistic/other stuff separate. In addition, it’ll provide an area where it will directly get the images into the eyes of those who’ll be making the decisions on whether or not to choose me for my services.

I’m still developing this wedding site so it’ll be some time still. But for the first time, I’m doing the web developement from the ground up 100% from scratch which is actually far more gratifying that just customizing a template.

Keep the faith, whichever it may be.

Also, to clarify. YES I DO WEDDINGS!! MOAR MOAR!!!! If you know someone who is looking for a photographer for ANYTHING, send them my way. But yes, I especially do weddings and am currently trying to fill up my 2008 and 2009 schedule so bring it on!! I have a fairly wide range of packages.

Lastly, I’m moving from Flickr to Smugmug because Smugmug allows me a bit more freedom with how and where I display my pictures. So sorry Flickr. It’s been a good couple of years but it’s time to move on. So check it out when I get it all finished: http://dev-inspire.smugmug.com

So my first shoot with the 5D would be a self portrait set that I had in my mind. But actually, none of the photos that I ended up keeping were what I had in my mind so perhaps I’ll give it another go sometime soon.

My first impressions of the 5D are simply WOW, having been using a 30D for about 18 months now I’m already used to the vast majority of the features found on the body as well as the body frame and style(it’s nearly the exact same dimensions as the 30D). It’s a bit fatter though and that’s to house the infamous full-sized sensor. So with that, ISO50 is awesome and the noise, or rather, the lack thereof on this camera is amazing. I think I only had to do any noise reduction in Photoshop on one of these shots. It’s pretty amazing. Even at ISO3200, the noise was easily managable and was able to be removed without destroying any detail. The reason for this is that due to both the physical size of the sensor and the resolution, the noise pixels are smaller and are able to be removed because the “details” of the photo are per pixel, larger than on the 30D. Absolutely SUPER crisp.

Combine that with the awesome kit lens, 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Macro, and you’ve got a mini-money maker with some fantastic Bokeh and closeup support. Truely and astounding combination.

Using the IR trigger, I used my 580EXII and 2 of the 3 430EX’s for these shots to do some dramatic and intense split-lighting. I’ve had some very good responses from this set and I’m looking very much forward to doing more.

Enjoy and feel free to comment.

So i finally got some L glass and I’m totally stoked about it. Here’s a small compilation of what I was about to glean on my first day of shooting. Specifically, at my Kung Fu school where there was a Chinese calligraphy class going on that evening and very little else at that particular time. So I just spent an hour or so shooting around the school getting used to the new glass. Boy is that thing heavy. Good thing I’m a beefy guy. I hear they’re good in bar fights as well.

Went up to Baltimore yesterday with an old friend of mine, Jeff Perez. He’s a budding photographer looking to get a bit more serious. I’m sure the bug will hit him once he realizes he can make actual money doing this stuff. I took him around and showed him some photojournalism concepts. We walked the inner harbor as well as toured the WWII sub the USS Torsk. I’ve been meaning to get back there since I was there the first time with my crappy point and shoot. But alas, here I am.

So here are just a few of the shots from that trip. If you want to see all of them, click the pics in my flickr stream down on the right side there. Enjoy!

The result of this pic is not makeup, nor did I augment her make-up’ish features with by hand. It’s a new plugin called Photowiz BW Styler. It has a great deal of options to choose from such as film type, grain type, ISO, development and processing methods, tint, paper weight and a number of filters. I was able to achieve this look by overdeveloping the “film” which gave her a sort of a 300 look but is also reminiscent of a 70’s or 80’s dystopian science fiction movie, where the film was overblown and super contrasty. I sort of stumbled on this look and for someone over the age 18 it might even be sexy. I hope to use this again in the future.

So while I know it’s not proper per se to rely on plugins to finish your photos; that the photograph should be properly composed in the camera and the computer process be only for optimizing the photograph you already created in-camera, I can’t help but experiment with new toys. I’m trying out some B/W film emulators and the such, so I had a short impromptu shoot today with Angie and Alyssa. It’s quite funny because just after I posted yesterday’s comment about how Alyssa loves to have her picture taken, today she wasn’t having it. Probably for the first time ever. Such as life though, right? There are a couple of pictures here of her reading me the riot act, it’s pretty funny. And then of course, Angie mocking her. I managed to get some semi-posed portrait style shots of Angie and Alyssa, something I’ve not done to date.

Enjoy

Anytime I drag the camera out she’s constantly like, “Take a picture of me!!” And then I take a pic and she absolutely HAS to see it on the camera, no matter how crappy the picture turned out. I love her to death. I’m both glad and dismayed at her enthusiasm at being photographed. I’m glad because she’s so photogenic and always willing to be posed even at the tame age of four. I’m dreading this same behavior around spring break in 2022. (She’ll be 18 then for those playing the home game.) Anyway, here’s some of the latest set that I had with her.. I love her to death my little dork pride and joy!

So I have to start redoing dev-inspire.com’s flash site. I’m not sure what the hell I’m going to do, I think a main site and two sub sites are going to fit the bill. (Sorry if I’m ripping off a theme here, Vanessa.) Except I’d like for the main page to contain the main information about the business and then I’ll have sub pages for portfolio as well as wedding and event photography. Then of course, there’ll be a link to this blog as well. This way I can have something that’s somewhat easier to update than most flash sites. Even the simplistic flash/AJAX flash galleries are a pain in the ass because you have to add one photo at a time. If I want to add my entire collection of finish photos then I’m going to be hurting after the first hundred or so.

I think what I’m going to practice and learn to do is, again somewhat like what Vanessa does which is when she posts something to show it off, she makes a collage and a single image.

We’ll just have to see how it’s all going to work out.

So this is a new thing for me. As some of you might know I’m a bit technically inclined and I have a number of other sites. This, as a homage to a good friend of mine, Vanessa’s Photography is my inaugural post. It seems a bit more logical that I have a singular location to rant on about my photography as well as display my works on my own server with my own readers. So if you’re here reading this now you’ve either Stumbled here or you were brought here by some mysterious force(I probably sent you a message of some sort saying, "hey check out these latest shots!" If you are one of my hapless victims, I can only hope that your stay here on my site is a good one. And may you benefit from my efforts as I’m sure I have from all of yours. Thank you for visiting and check back soon!
